The Italian Stone Theatre

The Italian Stone Theatre

CATEGORY: TERRITORIO & DESIGN
PROJECT: PROCESS

Stone materials, like other natural materials often used by humanity, are destined to run out in the near future. A different kind of use, ecological and rational, could envisage an alternative systematic process of design and implementation that would result in considerable savings in material: this is the idea behind the project.

TUSCAN TRAVERTINE SLABS ARE CUT AND ASSEMBLED USING A TECHNIQUE THAT IS PRACTICALLY “TAILOR MADE”, TO THEN BE MILLED WITH THE AIM OF OBTAINING ELEMENTS FROM THE FORMS APPARENTLY DERIVED FROM THE FULL BLOCK: A COLLECTION THAT IS CURRENTLY MADE UP OF A COLUMN WASHBASIN AND A CIRCULAR TUB

First and foremost this collection represents a production process project in which the structure of objects becomes decoration as well thanks to the use of two types of travertine, assembled to obtain an internal/external alternating relationship.
Responsibility and awareness are the keywords of this project.

LORENZO DAMIANI

Lorenzo Damiani, born in 1972, graduated in Architecture at Milan Polytechnic. He follows furniture and product design and has worked with several companies including Cappellini, Campeggi, Ceramica Flaminia, Montina, Illy Caffè, IB Rubinetterie, Caimi Brevetti, Luce di Carrara, Lavazza and Nodus.
The Triennale Design Museum in Milan has dedicated a personal exhibition to him entitled “Where did the inventors go? Lorenzo Damiani”, curated by Marco Romanelli. In 2012, two other personal shows: “Lorenzo Damiani: Senza Stile”, curated by Giovanna Castiglioni held at the Achille Castiglioni Foundation, and “Prova a Prendermi”, curated by Silvana Annicchiarico at the Triennale di Milano. For the sixth edition of the Triennale Design Museum in Milan he designed the staging dedicated to the Castiglioni brothers. His projects are present in the permanent collection of the Chicago Athenaeum, the Triennale Museum and the Vitra Museum.

This exhibition analyses topics associated with design using natural stone by highlighting the special features of materials from various production and processing centres in Italy in order to promote technical content based on tradition and the cultural heritage.
Designers in the forefront of current trends in design and architecture team up with companies based in various areas of Italy with characteristic identities in terms of materials, processing and technological experimentation in order to develop quality design products expressing the skills of these areas.
Compared to the design experiences promoted by Marmomac in previous editions focusing on the creativity of designers through free experimentation, the “Territorio & Design” exhibition is a specific project that aims to create industrial design products identified by stone materials.
The advent of new digital cutting, machining and modelling technologies – used by companies involved as partners in the event – means that stone can close the gap with the “dominant” materials on the design market since mass production processes typical of industrial items are now possible. This also makes it possible to promote the plastic, tactile and chromatic qualities of materials and develop products ensuring functionality, practicality and high formal content.
