When working with thick marble, water jet cutting tends to lose its precision at the end of the cut, producing irregular ripples.
What is usually considered a defect is emphasised here, emerging to create an aesthetic quality.
A SORT OF DRAPING THAT ALMOST SPONTANEOUSLY ASSUMES THE APPEARANCE OF A TABLECLOTH
The ring/tablecloth is made with a water jet concentrically cutting a marble block that is 20-25 cm thick. This method makes it possible to produce rings of different sizes from the same block, limiting material waste.
Drap y was the winner of the “Icon Award” 2017 and thereby became the new image for the Marmomac 2018 communication campaign.
PAOLO ULIAN
Graduated from the Carrara school of fine arts and then Isia of Florence. At the end of 1990 he worked in the studio of Enzo Mari in Milan, where he remained until 1992. He devoted himself to experimentation, participating in numerous collective exhibitions in Italy and abroad. In 2000 he exhibited at the Salone Satellite where he won first prize of the Design Report Award. In 2009, Beppe Finessi curated his first personal exhibition at the Fabbrica del Vapore in Milan. In January 2010 he was hosted at the Triennale di Milano, his second personal exhibition curated by Enzo Mari. In 2011 he won the 1st Social Design Award organised by ADI, and in 2013 he participated in the 6th edition of the Triennale Design Museum with an installation dedicated to Vico Magistretti. He also teaches at some universities and design schools. Some of his projects have become a part of the permanent collection of the Triennale Design Museum, the London Design Museum and the Montreal Museum of Fine Art.

This exhibition analyses topics associated with design using natural stone by highlighting the special features of materials from various production and processing centres in Italy in order to promote technical content based on tradition and the cultural heritage.
Designers in the forefront of current trends in design and architecture team up with companies based in various areas of Italy with characteristic identities in terms of materials, processing and technological experimentation in order to develop quality design products expressing the skills of these areas.
Compared to the design experiences promoted by Marmomac in previous editions focusing on the creativity of designers through free experimentation, the “Territorio & Design” exhibition is a specific project that aims to create industrial design products identified by stone materials.
The advent of new digital cutting, machining and modelling technologies – used by companies involved as partners in the event – means that stone can close the gap with the “dominant” materials on the design market since mass production processes typical of industrial items are now possible. This also makes it possible to promote the plastic, tactile and chromatic qualities of materials and develop products ensuring functionality, practicality and high formal content.
