Marmomac Academy - Carlo Ratti: From Material to Code: Digital Fabrication and the Future of Making

Description

Architecture’s relationship with material is being redefined. Through digital mapping, material scanning, computational design, robotic fabrication, and precision assembly, new tools are changing how materials are understood, shaped, and placed in the world.

In this talk, Carlo Ratti explores how digital technologies can transform the relationship between material and design. Digital fabrication does not simply make production faster or more efficient; it allows designers to work more intelligently with the specific qualities of each material, revealing new forms and connecting established craft traditions with contemporary methods of making.

At the same time, this technological shift opens a broader question: how can architecture rethink the landscapes and systems from which materials originate? Beyond production alone, the future of making may depend on a more reciprocal relationship between industry and territory, one in which digital tools help us not only use resources, but also understand their origins, transform processes, and perhaps give something back.
