Biography
Antonio Leone was born in Lecce and graduated in Architecture from the University of Florence in 1979, while also attending the CSDI (Advanced Course in Industrial Design) at Porta Romana.
Together with the practice Antonio Leone & Cesarina Zanetti Architetti Associati, based at the foot of the Apuan Alps, he has developed extensive research and professional expertise in architectural restoration and museum exhibition design. His projects include the Amedeo Lia Museum, the Archaeological Museum, the Museum of the Seal, the CAMEC in La Spezia, and the Mu.R.F. Museum in Calice al Cornoviglio.
In the field of industrial architecture, he has designed several major projects, including the Bruno Lucchetti Marmi e Graniti industrial complex, the Demetra Italia office headquarters, and the Semap office building in Massa-Carrara.
Over the past decade, together with his daughter, architect Isabella Leone, he has focused on the design potential of natural stone and marble processing technologies. By using marble as an iconographic medium, they transform it into innovative and visionary forms, giving life to the GAMLUX – Pietra di Luce collection.
The company involved
Demetra Italia S.r.l. has been involved in the research and development of ornamental stone quarries, including marble and granite, since its foundation in 1992. The company is personally managed by geologist Attilio Bencaster, who, together with his family, owns 100% of the company’s capital.
Today, Demetra Italia S.r.l.’s activities are built on the more than thirty years of experience of Attilio Bencaster and his team, who have always specialised in the exploration and extraction of marble and granite.
Since its foundation, Demetra Italia S.r.l. has sought out previously unknown and new stones for the international market, including Blue Eyes from the far north of Canada, Crema Luna® from the Bordeaux region, and Pierre de Lens from France. Its research has also led to the discovery and development of Verde Alpi Issogne marble, Arni marble from Tuscany, Grigio Friuli and Verde Argento from Piedmont, and the grey dolomites of the Cinque Terre.
This work has been carried out in areas outside the traditional regions of stone extraction.
Today, Demetra Italia S.r.l. focuses on researching historic Italian and international materials, rediscovering remarkable stones once used by some of the greatest artists and architects of the past and subsequently fallen into obscurity, such as Marmo della Gherardesca, Rosso Bell’Antico di Cassana, Bois Jourdan and Verde Sarrancolin.
Together with its affiliated company Marmo2mila S.r.l., Demetra Italia S.r.l. has been working for more than 20 years on turnkey projects, including villas, hotels, interior furnishings and bathrooms.
