The Future Skin

The Future Skin

Description

A talk conceived as a strategic listening platform to understand how the cladding and façade industry will need to evolve in the era of off-site construction.

The initiatives promoted by ADI highlight a particularly strong concept: off-site construction is the meeting point between Architecture and Industrial Design, as it shifts value from the construction site to the industrialised product.

What will be the skin of off-site architecture?

For decades, the materials industry has asked architecture:
“How do you want to use my product?”

Off-site construction reverses the paradigm.

Materials must now respond to increasingly stringent requirements:

  • modularity
  • prefabrication
  • speed of installation
  • maintenance
  • replaceability
  • traceability
  • carbon footprint
  • design for disassembly
  • circularity
  • digital product passport

The central question becomes:

“What characteristics must a façade material have to be compatible with industrialised construction?”
