Marmomac Academy in São Paulo: the talks at Marmomac Brazil

The report of the two technical sessions led by Gianni Simonelli on the design and preservation of natural stone.

During the latest edition of Marmomac Brazil in São Paulo, Marmomac Academy presented a technical deep-dive program aimed at architects, designers and industry professionals.

On 25 February, at the Content Arena, two seminars were held by Gianni Simonelli, focusing on the entire lifecycle of stone materials: from quarry extraction to long-term preservation strategies.

Talk 1: From Raw Material to Project – "From Quarry to Craft"

The first talk, titled "From Quarry to Craft – How Stone Becomes Architecture & Design," examined the production chain of natural stone. Simonelli illustrated the transformation process that allows a raw block to become a finished architectural element.

Key points of the talk included:

  • Quarry selection: technical criteria for choosing materials based on their intended use.
  • Processing techniques: how modern technologies influence the aesthetic and structural performance of stone.
  • Design integration: the role of stone in contemporary design and major architectural works.

Talk 2: Preservation Techniques – "Safeguarding the Aesthetic of Stone"

The second session, "Safeguarding the Aesthetic of Stone: Advanced Strategies to Preserve Its Timeless Beauty," focused on post-installation management and material durability. The aim of the session was to provide practical tools to maintain the visual and physical characteristics of stone over time.

Topics covered during the talk:

  • Degradation factors: analysis of chemical and environmental causes that can compromise the stone’s aesthetic.
  • Protection strategies: overview of advanced protective treatments and less invasive intervention methods.
  • Planned maintenance: the importance of proper protocols to ensure the longevity of surfaces in both public and private contexts.
